Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) est le dix-septième président des États-Unis. Élu le 6 novembre 1860 pour un mandat de 1861 à 1865 en qualité de vice-président d’Abraham Lincoln, il succède à son dernier le 15 avril 1865 pour terminer son mandat. Politicien du Sud et donc considéré comme traitre par de nombreux partisans de la Condédération, il sera ensuite aussi abhorré par les républicains par son opposition aux lois garantissant les droits civiques des esclaves émancipés et par la loi amnistiant tous les responsables de la Confédération..
