Suite aux problème de frappe du Cent “Flying Eagle”, un nouveau type est dessiné par le graveur en chef, James Barton Longacre,le cent tête d’indien (Indian Head). En fait, il s’agit de la Liberté coiffé d’une parure indienne. Ce type est frappé de 1859 à 1909. En 1859, le type ne possède pas d’écu au revers. A partir de 1860, le revers est modifié par le remplacement de la couronne de laurier par une couronne de chêne et l’ajout d’un écu.
Following the problems with the striking of the Flying Eagle cent, a new type was designed by the chief engraver, James Barton Longacre, the Indian Head cent. In fact, it was Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. This type was struck from 1859 to 1909. In 1859, the type did not have a shield on the reverse. From 1860, the reverse was modified by replacing the laurel wreath with an oak wreath and adding a shield.
