In 1833, Ferdinand VII abolished the Salic Law, allowing his daughter Isabella II to succeed him. Her brother, Infante Charles V of Bourbon, proclaimed himself king, supported by a section of the Spanish people, the \\\"Carlists.\\\" The Carlist claimants would later instigate three wars. The last (1872-1876) was led by his grandson Charles VII against Amadeus of Savoy and then against the First Republic.
