Un gros article d’une vingtaine de pages est en ligne “Les pensions et institutions privées secondaires pour garçons dans la région parisienne (1700-1940)” à “http://histoire-education.revues.org/839 . Il éclaire sur la fonction de maître de pension “Les maîtres de pension appartiennent dès lors à deux catégories officielles : les permissionnaires du chantre (dignité du chapitre de Notre-Dame qui a la tutelle des écoles), limités au nombre de vingt ; après une querelle avec l’Université à la fin du xviie siècle, ils obtiennent le droit de tenir pension à condition qu’ils aient obtenu la maîtrise ès arts et qu’ils s’installent exclusivement dans les faubourgs ; et les maîtres agréés par l’Université. Ces derniers, pédagogues répétiteurs membres de la faculté des arts, s’estimant victimes de la concurrence exercée par les permissionnaires du chantre, font appel à l’Université qui fait homologuer, en 1708, un statut aux termes duquel les maîtres de pension répétiteurs qui ont obtenu la maîtrise ès arts doivent, pour s’installer, faire reconnaître leur capacité et leurs mœurs par l’Université et rester soumis à l’inspection du recteur.”
