DEUXIÈME RÉPUBLIQUE
(24/02/1848-2/12/1852)
Louis-Napoleon fu eletto il 10 dicembre 1848 come primo presidente della Seconda Repubblica. Non aveva il diritto di candidarsi di nuovo nel 1852. Luigi Napoleone decise di fare un colpo di stato programmato per il 2 dicembre 1851, anniversario dell'incoronazione dell'Aquila e commemorazione della battaglia di Austerlitz. Il golpe viene ratificato da un plebiscito il 21 dicembre con più di 7,5 milioni di SI e solo 640.000 NO. Victor Hugo andò in esilio il 12 dicembre. L'anno seguente pubblicherà "Napoléon le Petit" che farà guadagnare a Louis-Napoleon, divenuto nel frattempo Napoleone III, questa celebre frase: "Napoleon le Petit by Victor le Grand".
