Cette médaille est décernée à Étienne Cabet (1788-1856), penseur politique français, premier politique à se définir comme communiste et prône un communisme chrétien. Karl Marx et Friedrich Engels le classent parmi les socialistes utopiques auxquels ils opposent leur théorie du socialisme scientifique. Il est notamment connu pour avoir écrit Voyage en Icarie (1840), description d'une cité idéale, et avoir fondé en 1848 une communauté utopique nommée Icarie, sur les bords de la rivière Rouge au Texas. .
This medal is awarded to Étienne Cabet (1788-1856), a French political thinker, the first politician to define himself as a communist and advocate Christian communism. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels classified him among the utopian socialists to whom they opposed their theory of scientific socialism. He is particularly known for having written Journey to Icaria (1840), a description of an ideal city, and for having founded in 1848 a utopian community called Icaria, on the banks of the Red River in Texas.
