Apollo 8 was the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit and the first to reach, orbit, and return to the Moon. The three astronauts making up the crew—Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders—were the first to travel near the Moon, witness and photograph Earthrise, and escape the gravity of a celestial body.
