Commento
Very rare token, probably by Germain Guiton, engraver in Paris in 1540 (see Mazerolle, p.526). The arms of Renée de France on this token are part of France on the one hand and of Este on the other (of the Empire, of France [according to the concession given in 1431 by Charles VII: azure, with three fleurs-de-lis or, with a border endented gules and or] and with the pale of the Church with above all d'Este). Renée de France is the second daughter of Louis XII and Anne of Brittany, born in Blois on October 25, 1510. Intellectually gifted, she also received a good education. Her charm earned her the favor of Charles of Austria (future Charles V) and then Henry VIII. However, she married Hercule d'Este in 1528, who died in 1559. She then settled in Montargis, where she remained until her death. Her dowry was set at 250,000 gold écus, guaranteed, in the event of non-payment, by the duchies of Chartres, Gisors and Vernon, to which Montargis was later added. She died on June 12, 1575.
