Quinto Cecilio Metello è il figlio di Quinto Cecilio Numidico. Ha iniziato la sua carriera in Africa durante la guerra contro Giugurta con Mario. Pontefice nel 97 aC, pretore nell'89 aC, gran pontefice nell'82 aC, si unì a Silla e condivise con lui il consolato. Proconsole in Spagna tra il 79 e il 72 a.C., fu sconfitto da Sertorio nel 79, poi nel 76 a.C. quando divise il comando con Pompeo. Sertorio viene infine assassinato nel 72 a.C. Condivide il trionfo nel 71 a.C. con Pompeo.
