I Bruttii, popolo originario dell'Italia centrale, si insediarono nel Bruttium fondendosi con le tribù locali degli Szeklers. Nel IV e III secolo mantennero la loro indipendenza e combatterono contro le città-stato greche d'Italia. Entrati in contatto con i Romani durante la lotta che li contrappose a Pirro (281-275 aC), si unirono ad Annibale durante la seconda guerra punica (221-202 aC). Dopo la partenza dei Cartaginesi, si trovarono di fronte ai Romani che li integrarono tra il 194 e il 190 a.C..
