Commento
Cette rare série attribuée aux Bellovaques est représentée par deux types de revers ; celui au pégase et à la croisette (dont nous avons eu trois exemplaires) et celui à l’aigle de face que nous proposons pour la première fois avec deux exemplaires dans la collection Gendre. Vendeuil-Caply est indiqué comme provenance de ces deux monnaie.
Le DT. 546 est l’exemplaire de la BN, repris par S. Scheers dans son traité et alors considéré comme unique et sans provenance.
This rare series attributed to the Bellovaques is represented by two types of reverse; the one with the pegasus and the cross (of which we had three examples) and the one with the eagle facing which we are offering for the first time with two examples in the Gendre collection. GALLIA - BELGICA - BELLOVACI (Regione di Beauvais)
(II - I secolo a.C.)
I Bellovaques, popolo della Gallia belga, occuparono l'attuale dipartimento dell'Oise. I loro vicini erano i Parisii, i Véliocasses, i Calètes, gli Ambiens ei Suession.. Cesare (BG. VII. 59) considera i Bellovaci come "il popolo più valoroso di tutta la Gallia". Prima delle guerre galliche, i Bellovaci erano stati alleati degli Edui. Nel 57 a.C. -VS. , furono gli artefici della rivolta dei popoli belgi, fornirono alla coalizione un contingente di sessantamila guerrieri, ma furono sconfitti e trovarono rifugio nel loro oppidum di Bratuspantium. Nel 52 a.C. -VS. , avevano promesso un contingente di diecimila uomini per l'esercito di soccorso. Hanno ritrattato, affermando di combattere i romani da soli. Alla fine, su preghiera di Commio, diedero alla coalizione duemila uomini. L'anno successivo, nel 51 a.C. -VS. , hanno preso per l'ultima volta il capo di una rivolta del popolo belga. Corréos, capo Bellovaque, guidò la sedizione per combattere i romani con gli Atrébates, gli Ambiens, gli Aulerques Éburovices, i Calètes e i Véliocasses. Con l'atrebate Commios, Correos incontrò gli eserciti romani ai confini dei paesi di Bellovaci e Suession.. Correos è stato ucciso, il che ha posto definitivamente fine alle ostilità.. Il principale oppidum dei Bellovaci era Bratuspantium che è difficile identificare con certezza con la città romana di Caesaromagus (Beauvais). Cesare. (BG.
