Charles, né en 1600, succéda à son père Jacques VI en 1625, l'année de son mariage avec Henriette de France, la soeur de Louis XIII. Charles avait conservé toute sa confiance au duc de Buckingham, le favori de son père. La guerre ne tarda pas à éclater entre le Duc et le Cardinal. En 1627, les Anglais remportèrent plusieurs victoires navales sur la flotte française qui essayait d'établir le blocus de La Rochelle. En 1628, le 28 otobre, la ville capitulera. Pendant ce temps Buckingham avait été assassiné. Ce jeton où sceptre et trident de Neptune sont associés pourrait commémorer ces événements. Sur ce jeton, Charles est roi d'Angleterre, de France, d'Écosse et d'Irlande, Fidèle défenseur de la Foi.

Carlo I era figlio di Giacomo I d'Inghilterra (1603-1625) (o Giacomo VI di Scozia, 1567-1625) e nipote di Maria Stuarda che fu assassinata dalla cugina Elisabetta d'Inghilterra alla Torre di Londra nel 1587. Carlo, nato nel 1600, successe al padre Giacomo VI nel 1625, anno del suo matrimonio con Enrichetta di Francia, sorella di Luigi XIII. Charles aveva mantenuto tutta la sua fiducia nel duca di Buckingham, il favorito di suo padre. Ben presto scoppiò la guerra tra il Duca e il Cardinale. Nel 1627, gli inglesi ottennero diverse vittorie navali sulla flotta francese che stava tentando di stabilire il blocco di La Rochelle. Nel 1628, il 28 ottobre, la città capitolò. Nel frattempo, Buckingham era stato assassinato. Il re entrò in conflitto con il Parlamento, che lo accusò di assolutismo e favoreggiamento dei cattolici.
