Dopo l'assassinio di Zenone, Anastase sposa Arianna che lo sceglie come imperatore. Il suo lunghissimo regno di 27 anni ripristina il potere imperiale. Morì senza eredi, ma oggi è considerato il fondatore dell'impero bizantino.
