L'étymologie de Aix-la-Chapelle vient du latin aqua (eau), pour Aix, et capella (désignant le manteau de saint Martin) pour Chapelle, le relique étant conservée dans l'édifice homonyme construit par Charlemagne de 794 à 797 (d'où il contrôlait son empire).
Le roi franc Pépin le Bref bâtit un château à Aix. Le premier document écrit sur la ville (765) la mentionne comme Aquis villa. Son fils Charlemagne apprécia l'endroit et en fit son lieu de résidence et la capitale de l'empire, construisant un palais dont la magnifique chapelle allait devenir la cathédrale. C'est à Aix qu'arriva en 802 l'éléphant blanc, présent du calife de Bagdad Harun ar-Rachid et que Charlemagne appela Abul-Abbas. L'empereur fut enterré dans la chapelle palatine en 814..
The etymology of Aix-la-Chapelle comes from the Latin aqua (water), for Aix, and capella (designating the cloak of Saint Martin) for Chapel, the relic being preserved in the homonymous building built by Charlemagne from 794 to 797 (from where he controlled his empire). The Frankish king Pepin the Short built a castle in Aix. The first written document on the city (765) mentions it as Aquis villa. His son Charlemagne appreciated the place and made it his place of residence and the capital of the empire, building a palace whose magnificent chapel would become the cathedral. It was in Aix that the white elephant arrived in 802, a present from the caliph of Baghdad Harun ar-Rashid and which Charlemagne called Abul-Abbas. The emperor was buried in the Palatine Chapel in 814.
