L’interdiction de la représentation de l’homme et des animaux valorise grandement l’écriture, d’autant plus que le Coran dit explicitement que l’art d’écrire est d’essence divine (sourate 96, verset 4). Les inscriptions ont donc à la fois une fonction de prosélytisme religieux et un rôle esthétique.

Questo è il periodo fondamentale per il territorio al-andaluso, l'origine del periodo musulmano in territorio iberico, finora dominato dai Visigoti. I musulmani crearono la loro capitale a Cordoba e 21 governatori si succedettero fino a quando il territorio divenne un emirato indipendente nel 756, sotto il regno di Abd al-Rahman.
