L’interdiction de la représentation de l’homme et des animaux valorise grandement l’écriture, d’autant plus que le Coran dit explicitement que l’art d’écrire est d’essence divine (sourate 96, verset 4). Les inscriptions ont donc à la fois une fonction de prosélytisme religieux et un rôle esthétique.

Califfo
Abd Al-Rhaman III, a volte francizzato in Abderraman III è nato a Cordoba il 7 gennaio 891. È nipote del settimo emiro omayyade indipendente di Al-Andalus. Nominato per la prima volta Emiro di Cordoba il 15 ottobre 912, fu il primo a emanciparsi dal potere di Baghdad assumendo il titolo di Califfo il 16 gennaio 929. Benché omayyade, aveva gli occhi azzurri, biondo e di carnagione chiara per i suoi stretti antenati, in particolare sua nonna, Christian, la Royal Infanta Onneca Fortunez. È meglio conosciuto per la Medina Al-Zahara, il palazzo che fece costruire in onore di sua moglie Zahra dal 936, che impiegò più di 10.000 lavoratori per 25 anni. Dal 2009, questo monumento è stato inserito nell'elenco dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO. Le sue immense rovine si trovano a 8 chilometri da Cordoba. Abd Al-Rahman III morì il 15 ottobre 961 e suo figlio Al-Hakam II gli succedette..
