Urbain ebbe un lungo regno durante il quale fu assistito dal fratello Antoine Barberini. Ha condannato Gallileo per le sue teorie copernicane. Urbano VIII successe a Gregorio XV (1621-1623) e precedette Innocenzo X (1644-1655).
