Médaille conservée dans une boîte en bois ronde avec à l’intérieur une feutrine verte
La Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations (grande exposition universelle des travaux de l'industrie de toutes les nations) de 1851 fut la première des Expositions universelles. Elle eut lieu du 1er mai au 15 octobre 1851 à Londres. Elle marqua le sommet de la puissance britannique d'époque victorienne.
Le Crystal Palace (en français : « palais de cristal ») était un vaste palais d'exposition en fonte et verre d'abord édifié à Hyde Park pour abriter la Great Exhibition de 1851, la première des expositions universelles. Il fut par la suite démonté et reconstruit, sous une forme agrandie, au sud de Londres, dans le quartier qui porte encore son nom. Il brûla en 1936. Le Crystal Palace fut un haut lieu touristique, qui attirait une population issue de tous milieux sociaux. Sa technique de construction en éléments standardisés préfigure celle de la préfabrication en architecture.
Le nom de « Crystal Palace » lui fut donné par le magazine satirique Punch. Le Crystal Palace Football Club a été formé par des ouvriers du palais..

It took place from May 1st to October 15th, 1851, in London. It marked the height of British power during the Victorian era. The Crystal Palace was a vast exhibition hall made of cast iron and glass, originally built in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, the first of the World's Fairs. It was later dismantled and rebuilt, in an enlarged form, in south London, in the area that still bears its name. It burned down in 1936. The Crystal Palace was a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all walks of life. Its construction technique using standardized elements foreshadowed the use of prefabrication in architecture. The name \\\"Crystal Palace\\\" was given to it by the satirical magazine Punch. Crystal Palace Football Club was formed by workers from the palace.

Victoria (1819-1901) era la figlia di Edward, duca di Kent, e nipote di Giorgio III. Succedette allo zio Guillaume IV nel 1837 e sposò suo cugino Alberto, principe di Sassonia-Coburgo nel 1840, contro il parere della madre. Da lui ebbe nove figli ma rimase vedova nel 1861. Pur rispettando le regole del sistema parlamentare, cercò di imporre le sue opinioni nel campo degli affari esteri. La sua preferita, Disraeli, le fece conferire il titolo di imperatrice dell'India nel 1876. Rispettata e amata, attiva e autoritaria, Victoria apparve ai suoi tempi come il simbolo dell'Inghilterra imperialista. Il suo regno segna l'apice del potere britannico.
