La Messembria era un'importante colonia di Megara, fondata intorno al 510 aC Si trovava sul Pont-Euxin, bagnata dal Mar Nero, a nord di Apollonia Pontica. Porto della Tracia, accolse profughi da Bisanzio e Calcedonia durante la rivolta ionica contro Dario all'inizio del V secolo aC Il nome stesso della città significa (sud = meshmbria in greco). La Messembria adorava l'Apollo solare di Megara, sua metropoli. La città fu conquistata dai romani nel 72 a.C.
