Après la 2,5 Euro Capelo et Ivens l’INCM, la Monnaie portugaise rend hommage en 2011 à un autre explorateur portugais, Fernão Mendes Pinto (1511-1583).
La vie de Fernão Mendes Pinto fut des plus mouvementées. Il fut tour à tour trafiquant, pirate, mercenaire, esclave, explorateur, missionnaire jésuite au Japon. Il voyagera en Abyssinie, Arabie, Inde, Malaga, Sumatra, Java, Siam, Tonkin, Chine et Japon...
A son retour au Portugal, il retraça ses aventures dans un livre « Peregrinação » (Pérégrination). Celui-ci fut publié à titre posthume en 1614 après avoir été passé au crible de l’Inquisition

Fernão Mendes Pinto's life was one of the most eventful. He was in turn a trafficker, pirate, mercenary, slave, explorer, Jesuit missionary in Japan. He traveled to Abyssinia, Arabia, India, Malaga, Sumatra, Java, Siam, Tonkin, China and Japan... Upon his return to Portugal, he recounted his adventures in a book “Peregrinação” (Peregrination). This was published posthumously in 1614 after being scrutinized by the Inquisition.
