Le 28 janvier 2013, lors d'un discours radiotélévisé, la reine Beatrix a annoncé officiellement sa décision d’abdiquer le 30 avril 2013 (jour de la Fête de la Reine aux Pays-Bas) en faveur de son fils aîné, le prince Willem-Alexander.
À l’avers de la pièce de 2 Euro commémorative un double portrait celui de la reine Beatrix et du prince Willem-Alexander rappelant le double portrait des pièces commémoratives du couronnement de la reine Beatrix en 1980 (double portrait des reines Beatrix et Juliana)

On 28 January 2013, during a televised address, Queen Beatrix officially announced her decision to abdicate on 30 April 2013 (Queen's Day in the Netherlands) in favour of her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander. On the obverse of the commemorative 2 Euro coin, a double portrait of Queen Beatrix and Prince Willem-Alexander is reminiscent of the double portrait on the commemorative coins of Queen Beatrix's coronation in 1980 (double portrait of Queens Beatrix and Juliana).
