Les inscriptions ont donc à la fois une fonction de prosélytisme religieux et un rôle esthétique. Les lettres sont d’abord anguleuses, comme ici, et sont dites coufiques (d’après leur prétendue genèse à Koufra, au sud de Bagdad) ; l’évolution ira plus tard vers une complexité croissante de la calligraphie.
The ban on the representation of humans and animals greatly enhances writing, especially since the Quran explicitly states that the art of writing is of divine essence (sura 96, verse 4). The inscriptions therefore have both a religious proselytizing function and an aesthetic role. The letters are initially angular, as here, and are called Kufic (according to their supposed genesis in Kufra, south of Baghdad); the evolution will later move towards an increasing complexity of calligraphy.
