La bataille de Solférino du 24 juin 1859 opposant les Alliés franco-sardes aux armées autrichiennes fait plus de 6000 morts et 40 000 blessés durant quinze heures de combats. Henry Dunant, s’étant rendu sur place afin de rencontrer Napoléon III dans le but de régler un différent commercial est alors témoin de ces milliers d’hommes blessés et mutilés. Il décide dès lors d’apporter son aide aux victimes, ce qui amena à la création de la Croix-Rouge quelques années plus tard.

The Battle of Solferino on June 24, 1859, between the Franco-Sardinian Allies and the Austrian armies, left more than 6,000 dead and 40,000 wounded during fifteen hours of fighting. Henry Dunant, having gone there to meet Napoleon III in order to settle a commercial dispute, witnessed these thousands of wounded and mutilated men.
