Commento

En 1575, le roi d'Espagne Philippe II, régnant alors sur ses possessions flamandes depuis le traité du Cateau-Cambrésis de 1532, fit entourer Menin de murs, et la ville fut encore fortifiée en 1578 par le baron de Montigny. Prise par Turenne en 1658, elle fut cédée à la France lors du traité d'Aix-la-Chapelle (1668). Lors des incessantes guerres de Louis XIV, ce dernier fit construire une nouvelle enceinte par Vauban, flanquée de plusieurs bastions et portes. Prise par les Alliés en 1706, elle fit officiellement retour en 1713 par le traité d'Utrecht (1713), aux Pays-Bas méridionaux (en gros, la Belgique actuelle sans la principauté de Liège) qui faisait alors partie du Saint-Empire. Louis XV s'en rendit maître en 1744 mais le Saint-Empire la recouvra par le traité d'Aix-la-Chapelle (1748).
In 1575, the Spanish King Philip II, then ruling over his Flemish possessions since the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis of 1532, had Menen surrounded by walls, and the town was further fortified in 1578 by Baron de Montigny. Taken by Turenne in 1658, it was ceded to France in the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668). During the incessant wars of Louis XIV, the latter had a new wall built by Vauban, flanked by several bastions and gates. Taken by the Allies in 1706, it officially returned in 1713 by the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), to the Southern Netherlands (roughly, present-day Belgium without the Principality of Liège) which was then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Louis XV took control of it in 1744 but the Holy Roman Empire recovered it by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748)
