Ce type est normalement non attribué et semble avoir été fabriqué en Italie entre 540 et la fin du règne. Cependant certains auteurs donnent ce type à l’atelier de Rome après la fin du royaume Ostrogoth d’Italie, voire à Justin (MIBE).

Giustiniano successe a suo zio Giustino nel 527 dopo una co-reggenza dal 4 aprile al 1 agosto 527. Regnò con l'imperatrice Teodora. La costruzione di Hagia Sophia fu completata sotto il suo regno, che segna l'apice delle conquiste bizantine. Cartagine così come l'Africa e parte della Numidia furono riconquistate dai Vandali grazie al generale Bélisaire. Dopo un secolo di dominazione vandalica, il romanismo tornò a regnare sul Mediterraneo. Belisario quindi attaccò gli Ostrogoti e prese Roma il 9 dicembre 536. Teodora morì nel 545. Giustiniano regnò altri vent'anni. Senza figli, gli succedette il nipote Giustino II..
