Le Souverain est une monnaie introduite en 1489 par Henri VII d’Angleterre. La production a cessé en 1604 au profit des “Laurel”, “Unite” et Guinée. La forme actuelle a été réintroduite en 1817 avec le célèbre revers à l’effigie de St Georges du graveur Benedetto Pistrucci.
On estimait que la durée de vie d’une monnaie de circulation était 15 ans.
En 1891, les monnaies frappées avant 1837 ont été rappelées pour échange. Avec l’or collecté, ont été frappées 13.680.486 demi-souverains en 1892 et 10.846.741 en 1900..

Victoria (1819-1901) era la figlia di Edward, duca di Kent, e nipote di Giorgio III. Succedette allo zio Guillaume IV nel 1837 e sposò suo cugino Alberto, principe di Sassonia-Coburgo nel 1840, contro il parere della madre. Da lui ebbe nove figli ma rimase vedova nel 1861. Pur rispettando le regole del sistema parlamentare, cercò di imporre le sue opinioni nel campo degli affari esteri. La sua preferita, Disraeli, le fece conferire il titolo di imperatrice dell'India nel 1876. Rispettata e amata, attiva e autoritaria, Victoria apparve ai suoi tempi come il simbolo dell'Inghilterra imperialista. Il suo regno segna l'apice del potere britannico.
