Franklin Pierce (23 novembre 1804 - 8 octobre 1869), est le quatorzième président des États-Unis d'Amérique. Illustre inconnu, mais nordiste esclavagiste, Franklin Pierce est désigné par le parti démocrate qui ne veut ni d’un sudiste esclavagiste, ni d’un nordiste abolitionniste. Élu en 1852, il écrase le candidat du parti whig (ce qui aboutira à la création du Parti Républicain). Sous son mandat, le Nouveau-Mexique et l’Arizona sont achetés au Mexique et l’expansion vers l’Ouest s’amplifie. Pierce abroge aussi le Compromis du Missouri (relatif à la répartition des zones d’esclavage) ce qui va contribuer à précipiter les États-Unis vers la guerre civile..

A famous unknown, but pro-slavery Northerner, Franklin Pierce was nominated by the Democratic Party, which wanted neither a pro-slavery Southerner nor an abolitionist Northerner. Elected in 1852, he defeated the Whig Party candidate (which led to the creation of the Republican Party). During his term, New Mexico and Arizona were purchased from Mexico and Westward expansion increased. Pierce also repealed the Missouri Compromise (relating to the distribution of slave areas), which contributed to precipitating the United States towards Civil War.
