La famille Barberini est originaire de Semifonte en Toscane et s’établit ensuite à Florence. En 1623, Maffeo Barberini devient pape sous le nom d’Urbain VIII. Trois de ses neveux, François et deux Antoine furent élevés par lui au cardinalat. À la mort d’Urbain VIII, la famille, accusée d’une insatiable avidité, perdit sa puissance et se réfugia en France auprès de Mazarin qui la réconcilia avec le Saint-Siège. Antoine fut légat d’Avignon jusqu’en 1629 puis grand aumônier de France, évêque de Poitiers puis archevêque de Reims en 1657. Antoine décéda en 1671.
The Barberini family originated in Semifonte in Tuscany and later settled in Florence. In 1623, Maffeo Barberini became Pope Urban VIII. Three of his nephews, Francis and two Anthonys, were elevated to the cardinalate by him. Upon Urban VIII's death, the family, accused of insatiable greed, lost its power and took refuge in France with Mazarin, who reconciled it with the Holy See. Anthony was Legate of Avignon until 1629, then Grand Almoner of France, Bishop of Poitiers, and then Archbishop of Reims in 1657. Anthony died in 1671.
